Planning Your Engagement Session

Your engagement session should be so much more than a tick in the box on the way to your wedding!

Some couples will dismiss the engagement session because they think they don’t need it. Here’s why you shouldn’t be so quick to dismiss it.

It’s great practice for your wedding and even better to get rid of the nerves. An engagement session with us won’t feel like you’re just getting your photos done as a matter of routine. Think of it more like a date night with the added bonus of some beautiful images.

The best engagement sessions are well thought out and have a little extra to them. Extra might be shooting at a location that is special to you or you could be wearing something that makes you feel good. A little extra makes it unique and special and the images will show that.

Here are some tips to help you plan your engagement session:

What to Wear

Importantly, make sure that you wear something that you’re comfortable in. Bring an additional outfit if you’d like to have some variety in your images. You may want to do a more dressy look and and then go a little bit more casual for the rest. Avoid tighter fitted clothing and anything with large graphics, loud patterns, text or anything with neon! Solid coloured warm neutrals photograph best. Think flowing dresses or layers. I’ve learnt that if it feels tight and uncomfortable, it will likely photograph that way as well. Rather than matching, aim to coordinate with warm solid neutral colours.

Choose Your Location

Is the suggestion of the park near your house more for convenience? Think about what you love to do as a couple and how we can reflect that with your images. Don’t have a specific location - no problems! This gives us an opportunity to explore Canberra. Do you want to be surrounded by trees in a forest or a field of grass or perhaps you’d prefer something more urban with graffiti, laneways and buildings? You could do a picnic by the lake, enjoy the sunset from one of the many hills surrounding Canberra with a few drinks. Make a day or night out of it. The images we create will always be there to remind you of the time you spent together! The simplest locations are sometimes the best - that field of grass might just be your ‘wow’ factor.

The Extra

There is not likely going to be another occasion where you make the investment in photography that you will when you get married - so I say go all out! Consider adding florals to your session - they really add quite a nice pop of colour. Bring a cute hat, a funky jacket, champagne, beer, pizza, blankets, pillows or a guitar if that’s your thing. Your engagement session is meant to be extra special.
